Leicester EDL activist advocates nuclear war and genocide
You might think that the murder, by a rogue US soldier, of 16 Afghani civilians, including children, would be one of those incidents that everybody could agree was a bad thing. Well you’d be wrong.
Some representatives of the EDL have taken a break from “peacefully protesting against Islamic extremism” long enough to argue (if that isn’t an unduly generous term for their barely coherent ramblings) not only that the killings were a good thing, but that there’s a need for more, not less, indiscriminate murder by coalition forces.
Paul James, a member of the EDL and a prominent figure in the military fantasists of the self-styled “Combined Ex-Forces” (CxF), went on Facebook to crow “Got to love an american soldier.. he had the right idea.. An eye for an eye.. time to get the lads home and nuke Aghanistan.”
James’ proposal was wholeheartedly endorsed by Leicester EDL activist Lee Tams, who replied (apparently unable to find and turn-off caps lock), “NUKE UM ALL AFGHANISTAN, IRAN AND IRAQ, I CAN LIVE WITH THAT AND FK INNOCENT CIVILIANS THEY DON,T GIVE FK BOUT THEM WHEN THEY BLOWING UM SELFS UP WIPING OUT EVERY FUCKER”
Tams who works as a road sweeper at Leicester City Council later went on to explicitly advocate genocide on the basis of a batshit crazy analysis of how the war in Afghanistan might develop. “THEY ALL NEED WIPING OUT IT,S ONLY WAY FORWARD. THEY ARE ALL A BIG BUNCH OF CUNTS,ITS GONNA GET TO THE STAGE WHEN THEY ALL JOIN TOGETHER AND GET RUSSIA AND CHINA ON THEIR SIDE, WE WILL BE FKED.”
Of late, fascists desperate for a new bandwagon to jump on now the EDL’s anti-Islamic extremism schtick seems to be losing its attraction, have made a lot of noise about paedophilia. (In the process they have, of course, been careful to avoid mention of the array of paedophiles and rapists in their own ranks.) In February a rowdy protest outside the trial of a paedophile gang (who happened to be Asian) almost forced a retrial after the demonstrators apparently attacked a barrister. Quite how they propose to square their supposed opposition to child abuse with their support for a child killer isn’t clear.

Northants EDL member remanded for racist abuse
Charles Dickie from Daventry has appeared in Northampton magistrates court on a charge of religious/racially aggravated abuse directed at a Muslim taxi driver. He is a prominent local EDL activist, who was apparently wearing an EDL shirt and chanting EDL songs during this sorry episode. Dickie, whose racist views have been thoroughly aired by a series of obnoxious facebook rants recently, was remanded until his trial.

Two tier justice
Although it’s nice to have a good laugh at the EDL’s expense, the real winners on the day were Leicestershire cops, who’ve had praise heaped on them by the local authorities and press for keeping the EDL safely in their boxes. However, we witnessed some disturbing policing going on at the end of the day.
A group of about 12 quite young Asian and black lads were stopped at the town end of St Margaret’s Way, separated, put up against a wall and stopped and searched very comprehensively by the police, whilst an evidence gathering team filmed them.
While this was going on, a group of about 30 EDL, including Simon Smith and some of the Leicester division, came down the road without any police supervision. Seeing the Muslim lads they changed direction to go straight at them and it was only the last minute scrambling of two police vans from a side street that stopped an ugly confrontation. Even then, the EDL group was not contained but simply stopped while the stop and searches were completed. The (white) cops engaged in friendly banter with the EDL and didn’t seem to view them as a threat, whilst the much smaller, much younger Muslim group were intimidated, humiliated and interrogated.

The EDL love to moan about how a “two-tier justice system” discriminates against white people but when it comes down to it, they are the ones getting preferential treatment.
EDL have sad day out in Leicester
The EDL had no fun in Leicester. Stepping out of their coaches, punters were greeted by a fuzzy sound system blaring miserable tunes to a small clump of die-hard xenophobes clustered in a car park in an industrial estate near a frozen river. Even at this early hour, many were pissed: one attendee had to chug his bottle of Lambrini before being allowed off the coach by the police, in case he bottled his compatriots in the boredom sure to follow. The mood of the car park, dampened by a mixture of the freezing cold and the grimly terrible nationalist music, reached its high point in the queue for the port-a-potties, which enjoyed some mild brawling.

The EDL’s status as a peaceful human rights organisation was thrown further into question after some booted boneheads ground an Argentinian flag in horse shit before attempting to burn it. Others from the Hull division brandished an enormous home-made England flag with the words ‘Muzzie Scum’ daubed on it. The unwieldy banner had its own run-in with some horse shit, before being confiscated by the police. The theoretical underpinnings of the day were summed up by one supporter: “I wouldn’t mind if they were coming here to work but they’re not, they’re just taking our jobs”.
As they trundled off, the huddle of 300 bigots was surrounded and videoed by a thick line of yellow-jacketed cops, with a few mounted on incontinent horses. The EDL were mostly too dispirited to live up to their reputation for boozy disorder: even the traditional scuffling between stewards and punters was half-hearted.
A few EDL supporters had stayed outside the police cordon, including a corpulent supremacist who attempted to racially abuse a local. “There aint no black in the Union Jack” he stammered at the man, who laughed in his face.
Other than a handful of locals who had turned out to shake their heads at the sorry spectacle, the rows of cops were pretty much the only witnesses to the sad event. Shoppers stayed away; the streets were empty as the EDL approached the clocktower. Even the anti-racist protesters waiting for them there were spared a glimpse of the sorry march, as police vans blocked the two crowds’ views of each other. The cops marched the EDL back out of the city centre at high speed.
Before the sad day, Leicester Casuals United had bragged that, unlike their usual marches, they wouldn’t let themselves be “herded like cattle”. But the shuffling clump of bigots remained both docile and bovine.
When they had returned to their freezing car park, EDL headman Kev Carroll mumbled into the microphone that the 20-minute stroll had been one of their longest marches ever, a pitiable admission. He excused the dismal turnout with reference to how it was 5 weeks since Christmas. Yaxley-Lennon, lay low for the duration of the march, perhaps scared of being spotted by one of the many malcontents within the ranks.
As the rally faltered to a close, the EDL packed up early. Scrambling back onto their coaches, one remarked “we can’t organise shit any more”.
Leicestershire cops target Muslim youth
The Network for Police Monitoring has expressed concerns that Leicestershire Police are targeting Leicester’s Muslim youth in a campaign aimed at scaring them into staying at home when the EDL come to march on Saturday:
The police have published leaflets saying that, under Operation Stay Safe, they can take any person under the age of eighteen to a ‘safe place’ during the demonstrations if they feel that person is at risk of harm… The police have not specified which situations they think might place someone ‘at risk of harm’, and campaigners say announcement has had the effect of deterring young people from taking part in demonstrations.
The powers police are using were meant to prevent children being put in a situation of exploitation or abuse and are clearly being abused here to prevent young people from exercising their freedom of expression. A local campaigner said that “Making a section of the community feel they cannot leave their homes is probably not the best way to deal with community tensions.”
Netpol say that the police are making the same mistakes they made in dealing with the 2010 EDL demo, which were thoroughly documented in their excellent report.
These tactics are further evidence of the police’s appeasement of the far right group which it is allowing to march through the shopping centre of the city at the weekend.
EDL supporter convicted of racist attack in Derby
Lee Preston targeted a Muslim taxi driver with a group of friends who said “We are EDL” while drinking in his cab. The group chanted “EDL” and threatened to kill Mohammed Rashid whilst attacking him. The group also assaulted a second taxi driver who tried to intervene. Preston was later found hiding under a bush.
Preston has been sentenced to 18 months for affray and racially aggravated assault causing actual bodily harm. I guess Preston doesn’t believe that the EDL are a “human rights organisation” either.
Leicester EDL march: route announced
The EDL will be meeting from 11am on Saturday 4th Feb for their Leicester march. The muster point is St Margaret’s Pastures, just outside the ring road. The march will start at 12.30pm when they’ll go onto St Margaret’s Way, Burley’s Way, Abbey St, right onto Belgrave Gate, then Church St and back to St Margaret’s Pastures where they will be allowed a static demo for a limited period of time. Pubs in the city centre are being discouraged from serving alcohol for the duration.
The route of the march goes perilously close to the Somalian area of St Matthews, a likely target for fascist trouble making on the day. Leicester Police’s Rob Nixon, who patronisingly told the local Asian community to leave it to him last time, is in charge again. We do not have any confidence that this idiot or his colleagues will defend the local community and call on anti-fascists to support the well organised community defence against this fascist invasion.
Meanwhile UAF are having a pointless parade at the other end of town, proving once more that they are more interested in self-promotion than actually helping to defend communities.
The EDL have been making their intentions clear on Facebook. Leicester Casuals United have said that “We will not be meeting in the town centre as we refuse being herded like cattle for the day, we will go where we want when we want” adding ominously “we have a good idea where we’re heading”. As EDL LGBT division leader Liam Woods put it “YAY WERE GONNA GET TO SMASH LEIECESTER UP”.

The Leicester public are not impressed by this EDL invasion or the lockdown of the city for the day. Despite increasingly desperate denials and justifications from the leader of the Leicester Division, most have seen through the shoddy excuse for a fight with Leicester’s Asian community and wish the EDL would leave the city alone.
Obviously it takes a lot more than distaste to stop these fools. If we are serious about turning the EDL away, we need to be out in numbers in the communities they are likely to target on the day. It would be a good idea for anti-fascists to join the local communities of St Matthews and Highfields and make sure that the fascists do not assault these areas. They shall not pass!
